Regular analysis can extend the life of both fluid and system. Hydratech’s Fluid Monitoring Program (FMP) is a very straight forward, effective way to proactively monitor closed-loop system condition.
A Journey of learning and growth
Joining Hydratech as a FMS Engineer meant stepping into a world of specialist heat transfer fluid solutions, where every project was different and required a sharp technical eye. From day one, Tom immersed himself in learning the ins and outs of the company's expert Services and Fluids.
During his initial months, he worked closely with senior engineers, shadowing them on site visits to leading UK businesses such as Arla Dairies, BT and Lidl. Each experience added to his knowledge, understanding the importance of effective fluid selection, monitoring and management - which in turn, maximises performance, reduces operational costs and delivers significant return on investment.
As his confidence grew, so did his responsibilities. By the six-month mark, Tom was independently handling system assessments, conducting fluid testing, and advising clients on best practices to maintain efficiency and prevent costly downtime.
Memorable moments and challenges
Looking back on standout experiences during his first year, Tom recalls working at a major manufacturing plant in Manchester that reported significant cooling system performance and reliability issues. Following a site visit and extensive fluid analysis, he identified sediment build-up as the root cause. Tom helped to install and operate a Side-Stream Filtration Unit (designed and manufactured in-house) to loosen any organic and fouling debris and flush it out of the system. The results? Improved flow rates, reduced energy demand, a significant increase in efficiency, and a grateful client who praised Tom’s expertise.
Tom’s first year hasn’t been without its challenges. Helping to provide 24/7 UK coverage, tight deadlines, and problem-solving under pressure has certainly kept Tom on his toes. But each challenge has only reinforced his adaptability and technical skillset, making him a stronger Hydratech FMS Engineer.
Teamwork and support
For Tom, one of the most valuable aspects of working at Hydratech is the opportunity to work alongside industry experts. Whether it's collaborating with Hydratech Lab Services or mentorship from senior FMS engineers, he always feels part of a company that shares a commitment to cooling and heating system excellence.
Looking ahead
As Tom steps into his second year at Hydratech, he’s eager to continue growing in his role. He plans to take on more complex projects, further his expertise in fluid and system management, and perhaps even mentor new engineers just starting their journey.
His first year has been filled with achievements, challenges, and learning opportunities, but most importantly, it has reinforced his passion for the work he does. Today’s anniversary isn’t just about looking back - it’s about looking forward to even greater successes ahead.
