Propylene Glycol Antifreeze

Propylene Glycol (PG), also referred to as Mono Propylene Glycol (MPG), has traditionally been selected for cooling and heating systems where a non-toxic classification is required. E.g. in food & beverage processing and where there are other environmental risk considerations - such as domestic solar thermal systems.

Propylene Glycol solutions have poorer heat transfer characteristics than other glycols and are relatively viscous at temperatures below -20°C, often necessitating larger pipe-work, heat exchangers and pumps. To improve system efficiency and reduce operating costs, Hydratech's non-toxic DTX glycol hybrids are worth considering.

Why Hydratech recommend inhibited Propylene Glycol over plain Propylene Glycol for closed-loop cooling and heating systems.

Plain or uninhibited Propylene Glycol provides antifreeze protection only – the lack of inhibitors and additives leaves systems open to corrosion and other issues. The lower initial price for uninhibited Propylene Glycol can be attributed mostly to the fact that the fluid does not contain an inhibitor package, buffers or additives required for a mixed metal system.

Uninhibited Propylene Glycol solutions can be particularly corrosive over time, potentially over 4 times more harmful to a closed-loop system than standard mains water. Inhibitors, buffers and additives neutralise the natural tendency of Propylene Glycol to become acidic and should be used to prevent corrosion, scale and fouling of pipe-work systems and associated components.
